Arriving by Sea
From the East…
Enter Pamlico Sound through Oregon Inlet – remembering, of course, to tighten your life jacket because this is part of the infamous Graveyard of the Atlantic! After clearing the bridge, turn north northwest just as you reach John Dough’s crab pots. For those who aren’t familiar with Mr. Dough’s pots, it is right before you reach Paul Gray’s fishing nets. On the right will be the old dock behind Bodie Island Lighthouse. Cruise on for a bit until you see Jockey’s Ridge — the highest sand dune on the East Coast — to the northeast. That will let you know that it is time to head west into Shallowbag Bay on Roanoke Island. You will know you are in the right bay if you see what appears to be a 400-plus-years-old ship — we always hang on to old stuff on the Outer Banks. On the left will be the Town of Manteo public docks, so if you are public, you are welcome to dock there. If you prefer a marina, there are marina facilities at Manteo and at Oregon Inlet.

From the North (Intercoastal Waterway)…
Proceed south — pass Camden Point to starboard and Powells Point to port — and enter Albemarle Sound. Turn south southeast and proceed to Manteo on Roanoke Island.

From the West…
Pass through Albemarle Sound. Make for Manteo on Roanoke Island.

From the South…
Enter Pamlico Sound. Proceed north for Manteo on Roanoke Island.
